Conqueror!

Names of conquerors fill history books, and their monuments populate the world’s cities. We remember Cyrus and Genghis Kahn, Alexander and Napoleon, Washington and Patton, and their exploits are the stuff of legends.

I see these names and I think of their deeds, and then I read Romans 8:37 –

“In all these things we are more than conquerors through Him (Jesus Christ) that loved us.”

I am a conqueror? an overcomer? In Jesus Christ, YES!

Paul, the writer of Romans, tells me in the preceding verses

35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?36 As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter.” (v. 35, 36)

We have already seen in verse 37 that the resounding answer to this question is ‘no’. Nothing, nothing can separate me from the love of Christ. I am more than a conqueror through Him.

What does this mean for mean for me today, right where I am? I must confess that can sometimes be knocked off my galloping steed of victory by a harsh word or a withering glance.

These words of scripture, though, tell me that the conquering power, the ability to overcome in this life, does not lie in my determination, my mindset, or my strength of will. It lies in my total dependence on and trust in the love and sacrifice of Jesus Christ. He is the true Conqueror, and I am riding with Him.

No tactic of the enemy, no attack, can separate me from His love!

  • tribulation
  • distress
  • persecution
  • famine
  • nakedness
  • peril
  • sword

I have a hard time thinking of anything this life can throw at me that doesn’t fall into one of those categories. He has given His absolute promise that I can come through them all as a conqueror.

This doesn’t mean that the battle won’t be fought. In fact, the very image of conqueror assumes a battle. It doesn’t mean that there won’t be hardship, sorrow, or pain.

It does mean that I can face today’s battle, whatever it is, with confidence and with courage and with an eternal perspective, because I know I cannot, will not be ripped from the safety and security of His love.

Today, right now, I am more than a conqueror –

through Him, Jesus Christ, Who loves me.

John 16:33 These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.

I John 5:4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world: and this is the victory that overcometh the world, even our faith.

Revelation 12:11 And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

  1. What a powerful truth! There is no reason to walk around with a burden of worry and stress as if I have lost the battle when God says that I am a conqueror through Jesus. Thank you, Beth!

I believe that if we (I) could ever fully understand and accept our position in Christ, the problems we face would become moot. Thank you for reading, Patty!
