Good Thinking

As I was driving out of the garage the other day, I thought of the chorus to an old song.

There’s a roof up above me,
I’ve a good place to sleep.
 There’s food on my table,
 and shoes on my feet.
You gave me Your love, Lord,
 and a fine family.
Thank You, Lord for Your blessings on me.
written by James, Russell, and Edward Easter (1954)

I sang that chorus all the way to work, and it changed my day.

It is easy to focus on the problems, the challenges, the wickedness, the horror, the meanness in this world – there is plenty to go around. Remembering to be thankful requires obedience and effort.

God told us in Philippians 4:8 –

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.

  • true
  • honest
  • just
  • lovely
  • good report

When I think about the true and honest things, I am thankful; and I imagine that if I work to notice and think about these things, I will have little time to focus on the darkness.

The chorus above is a good way to start. Want to join me?

II Corinthians 10:For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds;) Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ;

Phil. 4:8 – one of my very favorite scriptures. Wonderful way to start my day in this world!

I remember hearing a country singer or two singing that song, but I didn’t know who wrote it. It is simple, and it speaks of the needs of life–food, clothing, shelter. I try to give thanks to God for those things every morning.
