Insomnia

For those who suffer from bouts of insomnia I offer my sympathies along with this description of a wakeful night. I hope it brings a smile.

Awake well before morning my mind races with the to dos and why dids of life,

chasing rabbits who birth bunnies before one can be caught,

eluding needed sleep to continue the battles of the day.

Sending prayers for family, friends, and SLEEP

while searching for a reason for wakefulness.

Reading pages, pages to force drowsiness

but instead caught in the clutches of story –

fruitless effort contradictory to my goal.

Rising, away from the bed that haunts me,

without disturbing the sleep of those who can –

challenging, but necessary.

Soon dawn will come and

with the rising of the sun

my eyelids will set

only to be jarred by the incessant jangling

of the alarm.

Such irony.

Psalm 4:8 I will both lay me down in peace, and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makest me dwell in safety.

Psalm 127:2 It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.
